American democracy sometimes reminds me of the tic-tac-toe playing chicken I saw in a 42nd street arcade when I was a child.

We used to have a crypto-plutocracy masquerading as a democracy. We now have a de facto plutocracy sprouting on the grave of a decimated republic, disguised as a privatized democracy.

The Littleton, Colorado killers suffered inside their gilded cages a severe atrophy of the spirit, a purely emotional, not financial, deprivation.

We Israelis need a scarecrow to frighten ourselves, one frightening enough to pump adrenaline into our national bloodstream. Otherwise, it seems, we cannot function.

I am writing today to express my deep concern over one of the pressing issues facing you in Oklahoma, particularly this month and to make a moral plea. As you are well aware, your state is scheduled to execute eight of its citizens in the next 25 days.

Our reckless use of animals may cause mayhem in the "natural order" in its effect on the animals, and this should lead us to question the morality of doing so.
